                             Diabetes  Overview

According to Wrong Diagnosis, located at  http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/d/diabetes/prevalence.htm , more than 135 million people worldwide currently suffer from diabetes.   This figure is expected to increase by the same number about every 10 years.  This is a disease of epidemic proportions.  In this page we will briefly examine the major causes of, and cures for diabetes.

                          Causes of Diabetes

The book pictured here, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, by Michael Murray, N.D., and Joseph Pizzorno, N.D., is an excellent source of information regarding natural approaches to combatting diabetes.  Among the causes of diabetes they list, are:

1.  Genetic disposition.  In other words, children of diabetic parents are likely to be more susceptible to this disease.

2.  Diet.   My own research leads me to the conclusion that as in the case of other diseases such as cancer, eating habits of parents become the eating habits of the children.  Both diabetes and cancer are diseases that can be traced to diet (though  cancer can result from exposure to chemicals from other sources, as well).  We will presently see why this is the case.

                 How Does Diabetes Occur?

Diabetes basically occurs when the body produces too little insulin (hypoglycemia), or too much insulin (hyperglycemia).  [Insulin is a hormone that is secreted by the beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans which are in the pancreas (drawing to follow)]  These conditions are known as Type 1 diabetes, and Type 2 diabetes, respectively.  "Type I, or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus(IDDM), occurs most often in children and adolescents.  Type II diabetes, or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM), usually has an onset after 40 years of age." Ibid.

                                    What Exactly Happens?

Certain substances in the food supply are principally responsible for damage to the pancreas, and specifically to the beta cells in the pancreas, which produce insulin.  In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin.  In type 2 diabetes the cells of the body no longer respond to the insulin produced.  It stands to reason that in order for the incidence of diabetes to be at the epidemic proportions we find today, the substances causing this damage must be found commonly in the diet of people of most industrialized countries.  This is exactly the case.  [Diseases don't just happen for no reason; there is always a cause and effect relationship.](Interestingly enough, people in countries in which fewer refined foods are eaten have much lower rates of diabetes.)  Read on to find out which two substances are principally responsible.

                                 Bleach in Your Sugar!

Sugar grows a beautiful golden color, so why then is sodium hypochlorite, aka bleach sprayed on it during processing?  To turn it white, of course!  Somebody thought you preferred sugar to be white, but they didn't ask you about this, and they didn't even tell you they were going to do this.  If bleach works to whiten your clothes, it'll certainly work on sugar, right?  Of course it will, but did you ever accidentally spill bleach on your hands or clothes?  It will eat holes in your clothes in no time, and it certainly works wonders in the bathroom as a cleaner for mold too.  However, since most of your food and drink products have this bleached sugar, the average person ends up consuming probably anywhere from 12 to 36 ounces of bleach per year (just a guess on the amount).  Needless to say, there is no reason to bleach sugar.  A company representative might tell you that it is bleached in order to kill bacteria.  If that's the case, how are they able to produce and sell natural unbleached sugar?  Natural sugar does not produce diabetes.  They have been consuming it as sugar cane juice and chewing on raw sugar cane for hundreds of years in the countries where sugar is produced, without the complications of diabetes.

So Why is White Sugar a Problem?

White sugar that has been bleached is the greatest single factor in damage to the sugar regulating mechanism of the body; the pancreas, and the beta cells.  There are a number of reasons why this is so:

1.) Bleach is an extremely corrosive acid.  It binds chemically with sugar when the sugar is sprayed with chlorine gas.  Sugar itself is readily absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, as the entire fuel of the body is based on sugar in various forms.  The fact that the sugar is bound with the chlorine makes it rapid absorption all the more dangerous, as it causes rapid spikes in sugar levels in the blood at the same time that it damages the beta cells.

2. ) As mentioned above, white sugar gets into the bloodstream very quickly, causing rapid elevations in blood sugar levels.  The constant rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels from the continuous consumption of a never-ending supply of white sugar products, in addition to the physical damage caused, also wears the pancreas out.

3. ) White sugar is completely devoid of nutritional content.  It is a useless food.  The purpose of putting food in the body is to provide nutrients for its proper functioning, and white sugar fails miserably on this count.

                          What Can You Do?

Before we get to the next few paragraphs specifying what alternative medicine substances have proven effective for diabetes, I would like to point out that there a few things that you can do:

1. Avoid as much as possible, products that are made with bleached sugar, i.e., white sugar.  Every time you purchase products made with white sugar, you are doing principally two things:
a) promoting the company that made the product, i.e., increasing that company's profits.
b) undermining your health.  Bleached sugar is not only principally responsible for the epidemic of diabetes, but it is also implicated in promoting infections of many kinds throughout the body, such as yeast infections, and others.  It does this by changing the balance between the friendly bacteria and the harmful bacteria that reside in the body.  (Fact: everyone has a wide variety of harmful bacteria that live inside the human body, and which are kept in check by the human immune system and the friendly bacteria, such as those which live in the gastrointestinal system.  Some of these friends can be found in yogurt, as acidophilus and other cultures.  You can buy the plain yogurt and add your own sweetener such as Dalfour and other brand jams that do not have bleached sugar.)

2. Contact manufacturers of products that are made with bleached sugar (Any label that has the word sugar is basically made with bleached sugar.  The companies that use raw unbleached sugar always state this on the label,  because they want you to know.).

3. If raw sugar is not available in your supermarket, ask the manager for it, and buy it for your tea/coffee/cereal, etc.  They will quickly do what they can to order it in most cases.  It costs more, but what is your health worth?  As more people buy raw sugar the price will come down.  You also make a contribution to sane manufacturing practices (from the Latin word sanus, meaning healthy).

               The Problem with Prescription Drugs

Prescription drugs such as Glucophage and others have been created to treat, not to cure diabetes.  In addition, many of them produce what is known as the rebound effect, as it is commonly known in medicine, in which the drug itself produces the same symptoms as the disease.  Given this scenario, when would a patient be taken off prescription drugs? Never.  When could the patient expect to be healed of diabetes? Never.  Patients need to start asking themselves and their doctors some serious questions, such as:
1. If medicine is supposed to heal, then why must it be taken forever?
2. Why is modern medicine receiving billions of dollars in donations to fight the major diseases afflicting humanity, and not finding cures?
3. If modern medicine hasn't been able to cure patients of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, in over 50 years, isn't it perhaps time to look elsewhere for cures?
4. Where is the cure for diabetes?

stevia.jpg

                                           Stevia

Stevia is a plant originally from South America, which can safely be used in place of sugar for diabetics.  It is many times sweeter than sugar, is an excellent subsititute, and can be used in coffee, tea, on cereal, for baking, etc.  The trick with stevia is to find the manufacturer that has been able to eliminate the slight after taste.  I have researched a number of stevia products by different manufacturers, and the only company that seems to have perfected this technique is the one that produces Greenlite stevia.

Aspartame, as Nutrasweet, Canderel, Equal

Many diet products such as soft drinks and others are made with a variety of artificial sweeteners.  Aspartame, marketed as Nutrasweet, Canderel, and Equal, is one of the most popular artficial sweeteners, and is available in the supermarket as a replacement for sugar also.  Unfortunately, most consumers are not aware that aspartame once inside the body, breaks down into methanol, which is not a slightly poisonous substance, but rather a highly toxic one.  It has been known to produce a wide variety of serious health problems, among them joint problems, headaches, vision problems, etc.   There is more information at the following web site:

The Truth Be Told

It should be fairly obvious to all that companies that produce and market these products have paid for studies to be done.  By and large the results of these studies oddly enough almost always seem to find no health hazards in the products.  Strange?  Not really, when you consider that there are very few cases in which a company would pay for extremely expensive research only to find out that their product is a health hazard.  There are a few cases which have surfaced fortunately however, and two that come to mind are the tobacco industry's damning report, as portrayed in the movie "The Insider", with Al Pacino and Russell Crow, and the cell phone industry's research, whose 25 million dollar study proved the serious health hazards of micowave technology. (See: http://healthglimpses.com/id9.html )  Unfortunately, in most cases of dangerous products in the marketplace, 90% of consumers are unaware of the specific hazards to their health.  In many countries, that number is higher, with nearly 100% of the population being unaware that their trip to the doctor was likely provoked by something they ate, drank, inhaled, or otherwise used.

Bitter Melon and Gooseberry

Natural Substances Effective Against Diabetes

1.) Bitter Melon - The bitter melon has been used for some time in cultures that it is native to for diabetes.  There is clinical evidence (soon to be added to this page) that it is beneficial in treating diabetes.

(It should be noted that in many cases of treating diseases, the caution of not using both natural and prescription medication is made.  In the case of diabetes, medications such as Glucophage and others simply treat diabetes, and will never cure it.  In addition many of these medications produce what is known in the medical field as the 'rebound effect'.  In essence the medication produces the same symptoms it is treating.  This guarantees continuation of the medication, but it will never heal the disease.  Alternative medicine seeks to go to the root of the problem and heal the disease.  In doing this, it is possible that as the natural medicine begins to heal, the prescription medication will also be lowering the blood sugar level, which could produce a condition in which the blood sugar is too low.  An adjustment, i.e. lowering of the dose of prescription medication would be the most likely avenue to pursue, and you might want to do this in conjunction with a doctor who is open to alternative medicine.)

2.) Prickly Pear Cactus
